This is Gilbert, a friend and coffee-buddy of mine who I met years at the Grey Dog Cafe in the Village. He read a book by Robert Bresson in Cafe Cafe in Soho, as I drew him in about 1/2 hr. I like capturing people in their quiet moments – which can be quite internally active, engaging in ordinary things – views that we take for granted, but that are rich in content.

On Tuesday evenings, I gather with a handful of professional NY artists in the East Village. We take turns posing for each other for 20-25 minutes at a time. I look forward to these sessions, as a time to hone my drawing skills, the foundation for my portrait paintings.

This is Boo… my girlfriend’s Chihuahua. Its working under pressure when I have no idea when the dog is going to move… Perhaps that uncertainty gives it a freshness… ?

I love the small sketch on tan paper. In the East Village, I sat on a bar stool, looking towards the windows where two women sat... In the two drawings on the right, it was a challenge to capture these faces that were still for a moment and then became animated in conversations… Thankfully, they weren’t doing all the talking and became still again, long enough to capture more….
